1. Whats A Paleo Diet?4
What’s a paleo diet? Is it eating fruity pebbles because the Flintstones are on the cover of the box? Is it following the diet of your dinosaurs? Maybe the diet of your grandparents because they’re ancient?
Well, it’s the diet of our ancestors from the Paleolithic era. The Paleolithic era ranged from around 3 million years ago up until 12,000 years ago. That’s a few years older than your parents and grandparents.
It was the stone age. It’s before you could rip through a fast food drive through while vlogging your life for all of social media to see. They had to hunt for food.
There was no such thing a Detroit style pizza with garlic butter crust topped with quadruple halal pepperoni (totally not something I’ve ordered in the past).
2. What Does The Paleo Diet Consist Of/Paleo Diet Foods?1,2,3
Like I said in the previous section, our ancestors had to hunt and gather food. There was no Paleolithic Wal-Mart or Target they good go to after strapping up their ugg boots for a shopping trip!
What does the paleo diet consist of/what are you allowed to eat on a paleo diet:
- Lean meats (beef, chicken, turkey, etc.)
- Fish
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Eggs
- Nuts and seeds (almonds, flaxseeds, macadamia nuts, pumpkin seeds and others)
- Oils such as extra virgin olive, walnut, macadamia nut, coconut and avocado oil
- Salt and spices
There was no farming back then, so, what foods do paleo avoid?
- Dairy
- Grains (barley, oats, wheat)
- Legumes (beans, lentils and peanuts)
- Processed foods
- Refined and added sugar
- Your matcha batcha whatever latte with God knows what modifications
You are allowed to drink coffee (I see you there with the french vanilla creamer, put it away), tea and water.
Technically, you don’t have to avoid anything, but you’re supposed to be sticking to the diet if you’re on paleo.
3. Paleo Diet Benefits1,2,3
The first and foremost obvious one is, you’ll be eating more whole foods instead of processed foods. It’s a lot harder to overeat chicken breast than it is store bought potato chips or candy bars. That would make losing weight a lot easier as well.
Another big one is, your body won’t be as inflamed because you are eating less processed foods. If you are eating fried foods, foods high in trans fat or food very high in salt, your body will be more inflamed.
Now, why is inflammation bad? Chronic inflammation can lead to many disorders as listed below (not all-inclusive list):
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Autoimmune disease (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis)
- Anxiety and depression
- Certain cancers
- Cardiovascular disease (hear diseases and high blood pressure)
- Diabetes
- Gastrointestinal diseases (Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBS))
- Parkinson’s disease
- Respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
So, it would be helpful to eat a whole foods diet to avoid increasing your chances of experiencing any of these.
You would also be consuming more protein which is CRITICAL for building muscle. Having more muscle will increase your metabolism.
Digesting protein itself takes more calories (20-30% of the calories of the protein you ate) as opposed to 5-10% for carbohydrates and 0-3% for fats.
Some other claims that thepaleodiet.com makes are, the diet will potentially give you clear skin, increase your energy, improves mental clarity and boosts your immune system.
The only claim that I could find backed by science, when looking specifically at the paleo diet, was that it improves bodily inflammation.
4. My Take On The Paleo Diet1,2,3
I’ve lost 50 pounds, gained it back and lost it again and kept it off the second time. We’re focusing on diets for weight loss, in terms of that I would not give up any food group, personally.
My problem with the paleo diet, if you’re following it strictly, you have to give food up. I don’t want to give anything up. I want to find healthier alternatives and enjoy everything in moderation. An example being my AMAZING protein pizza recipe I eat almost every single day. I love pizza.
So for me, I wouldn’t be able to do it.
Am I saying it’s a bad diet? Not at all, they encourage consuming whole foods. I can’t say anything bad about that. I personally wouldn’t like restricting myself form anything. What makes it really funny is I’m eating a Crumbl cookies while writing this lol.
They also need to have long term studies conducted on the diet before I’d be willing to recommend it.
Have you tried it? Has it worked for you? Is there data that I missed that’s promising for paleo? Please share!

You knew this was coming, I mean, how could you not??? I’ll keep putting it any of my posts when I get a chance. NO MATTER WHAT DIET YOU’RE ON, if you are eating more calories than our body requires, you will GAIN WEIGHT.
You have to eat less calories than your body requires. That’s an entire other topic. You can check out my article EVERYTHING About Calculating Calories, for that. Believe me, it’s a life changing article!
