I’ve lost 50 pounds twice and recently went a mini diet where I lost 20 pounds, so I have know what works and what doesn’t!

Finished up Ramadan pretty strong. We also have the option to fast for six days after Ramadan, so I’m doing that right now. On day five, so almost done with that too!

Anyways, tracking your food for weight loss. It’s like budgeting, if you don’t budget and are terrible with money, how are you going to know where you are overspending? You need a game plan.

Same with food, if you don’t know many calories you are eating, how would you know how much to adjust your food to lose or gain weight depending on your goals?

You don’t have to track your food for weight loss forever, once you have a good idea of how much you are eating, you can eye ball it. I personally like to track and weight my food most of the time still, only at home though.

I don’t take a food scale when I go out to eat.

I’ll also go over the food tracker free version of MyFitnessPal in more detail which I use to track my calories! It’s very easy and been the best app for tracking food for weight loss, in my opinion!

This will BEST article you NEED for tracking your food for weight loss!

Tracking Food For Weight Loss

Anyone regularly eat an entire pizza in one sitting? Along with breadsticks and then some dessert? Only me? Can’t be.

I do that every now and then. I can do it because I regularly exercise, so my body eats it up.

Anyways, we’re not here to talk about my food addictions, we’re here to talk about the importance of tracking food to lose weight!

I know it may seem daunting at first and that little bit of extra effort can seem it’s time consuming. I promise it will make a world of difference.

You will know exactly what you are eating and know how much to increase or decrease your calories. You don’t need to unnecessarily starve yourself more than you need to. Or if you are eating too much, you can slightly decrease your calories. Let’s get into it!

1. How Many Calories Do you Need?

It’s been a long time since I’ve talked about this, but it needs to be stated here. If you are eating more calories than your body requires, you will GAIN WEIGHT. You can eat all the “healthy food” or “unhealthy food” you want, if you eat more calories than your body requires, you will gain your weight. That’s why tracking food intake for weight loss is so important.

A lot of people ask “what type of food to eat to lose weight”. You can really eat anything and lose weight as long as you are in a caloric deficit. Now, you can make smarter choices, of course.

I’m not going to get into how to calculate your calories here, but I’ll link an article of how to do that. Whether you want to or not, it would make your life easier to know how to do this. If you really want to get in the best shape of your life, you’ll have to put in effort.

If it were really that easy, everyone would be in shape. To be honest, it’s not even that hard. Just put in the effort. I did it and I’m the most intelligent person, but I have good work ethic..

Here is the article of how to calculate you need: EVERYTHING About Counting Calories.

2. Tracking Food For Weight Loss

I’ve used MyFitnessPal for years, it’s a food tracker online and it’s a free. It has paid features too, I’ve never got the paid version.

Most food you can look up on it. You can also create your custom meals and save it on the app. The free version will also give you a breakdown of your macronutrients (macros) so you can make sure those are in line.

I especially pay attention to protein. That’s key to building muscle. Also, when losing weight, you need to preserve as much muscle as possible. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be.

Anyways, here is a video below of me tracking my food and how to use the app a little bit (go to the bottom of the video player and full screen it to make it easier to watch):

As you saw, you can also see the breakdown of your macronutrients and that’s great!

3. Weight Your Food

Now, you have to know what you are tracking. That’s why, it makes a HUGE difference to have a food scale. It’s about $25 and will make the whole process MUCH easier. Here is the food scale I use:

It has multiple different units you can you can measure in. Some include, grams, ounces, milliliters and more.

When you track, make sure to track any oils or syrups you are using. If you are using lots of oil, that’s still calories. Everyone thing counts. I wish you could eat a pint of ice cream at night and it not count, but it does, unfortunately.

All you need is a food tracker app such as MyFitnessPal and a food scale. Yes, it will take a few extra minutes, but it will help you to get in the BEST shape of your life!

That’s the BEST advice you need to know about how to track your food! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
